Proforma invoice

This is a proforma invoice that adds itself up in the order the customer reads it. Three lines at their quantities and unit prices make the goods subtotal; the trade discount comes off the goods; sales tax at your rate applies to the discounted goods; freight or shipping goes on its own line after the tax; and the proforma total is the last and largest figure, the amount the sale will come to before the goods ship. A proforma is lines, and each line is a quantity times a unit price, worked so the customer sees what each thing costs before any discount is applied. Three lines cover most orders on account; the paid plan carries as many as the sale needs.

The trade discount off the goods, the tax on what remains

A trade discount is a share of the goods, taken off before tax, and the sales tax at your state's and your city's rate applies to the discounted goods rather than the list price. The document shows the discount and the tax as their own lines so the customer sees the base of each; the rate is yours to enter and the document publishes none.

Freight after the tax, then the total

Freight or shipping goes on after the tax, untaxed, which fits the states that do not tax separately stated shipping; if yours does, add it into a line. Goods less discount plus tax plus freight is the proforma total, the figure the customer approves before the invoice is issued. The paid plan turns the approved proforma into the invoice without retyping.
